PARRISH — There were two reasons why Dan Callaghan started a charity pro-am golf tournament — a desire to give back to the community, and his sister-in-law Margie, who battled breast cancer.

Now, Callaghan has two more. His daughters Jane Trinci and Patty Virgilio are both battling breast cancer.

“Now it’s become more of an issue, an obsession, to raise as much as we can,” Callaghan said.

The third annual Callaghan Tire Charity Pro-Am golf tournament to benefit Golfers Against Cancer is scheduled for Nov. 5-7 at River Wilderness Golf and Country Club in Parrish.

The entry fee of $1,500 comes with a practice round and two days of golf and the “Tall Tales Party” at Callaghan’s Bradenton home on Friday night.

“Everybody tells tall tales,” said Callaghan, owner of Callaghan Tires.

It is $500 to sponsor a hole and $100 to attend the pairing party.

Last year’s event, which attracted 24 senior pros and 72 amateurs, raised more than $40,000 for the fight against cancer.

An 8-handicap golfer who has played on some of the best courses around the country, Callaghan got the idea for his own tournament when he first played the Montecristo Cup Charity Pro-Am five years ago. There he met some of the top golfers in the world. Friendships were formed.

“You get to know these guys on a personal basis,” Callaghan said.

With the help of Tony Jacklin, Callaghan was able to assemble a quality field of senior golfers who were willing to not only spend a few days playing golf but also mix with the amateurs.

“I know all these pros, and I just figured it would be a lot of fun,” Callaghan said. “It’s an annual event now, and they look forward to coming back.”

Among the pros committed to this year’s event are Larry Laoretti, Bobby Nichols, Tom Shaw, Larry Ziegler, Lou Graham, Gibby Gilbert, Jim Dent, Jim Albus, Dow Finsterwald and Jacklin.

“The challenge each year is to have more players and raise more money,” Callaghan said.
